Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, dating back to 1865. Today, June 13, is the feast of St. Anthony of Padua. When the Sacred Heart of Jesus Mission built its first wood-frame church building in 1925, it was furnished with altars, pews, statues and other items provided by St. Joseph’s Church, which had just been remodeled. Included in those furnishings were the statues of St. Anthony of Padua and St. Jude, which are located in the vestibule of our current church. Both statues were restored by Louisiana Church Interiors in 2014.St. Anthony was born in Portugal and joined the Franciscan Order in1220, moving to Assisi while St. Francis was still living. He was known for his wisdom and extraordinary preaching talent. He also had a strong devotion to the poor. Our statue of St. Anthony wears the Franciscan habit. He carries the Christ Child who holds a basket of bread. It is said that the child Jesus appeared to St. Anthony in a vision. With his free hand St. Anthony offers a loaf of bread to a beggar. Different legends account for the donations of what is called “St. Anthony’s Bread,” an offering made for the benefit of the poor in thanksgiving to God for blessings received through supplication to St. Anthony. In many churches, including Sacred Heart, the “poor box” is placed near an image of St. Anthony. ... See MoreSee Less

Family Spotlight

The Bodin family – Katie and Greg, with their twins Eliza and Joseph.
When asked why they chose Sacred Heart, Katie said “we were looking for a school where our children would thrive and receive a more personal touch to their education.  The moment we stepped foot on this historic campus, we knew Sacred Heart was different from anywhere else – the atmosphere and the way the children interact were just different. It was a palpable feeling.”
